Important Steps in Medical Courier Training

All our drivers at Fleet Couriers receive high levels of training before they start driving routes and delivering packages. But certain types of deliveries require couriers to have different training. Because we do medical deliveries at Fleet Couriers, a driver must have the right training before becoming a medical courier. We have a training program that all our medical couriers go through to ensure that they can perform their jobs within compliance standards.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the important aspects of medical courier training.

HIPAA Compliance

In 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) went into effect. The main purpose of the act was to modernize the flow of healthcare information to simplify communication for patients and providers. But with these changes in communications, there also came privacy concerns. To protect patients’ privacy, HIPAA includes guidelines for handling their private information. Medical couriers also have to follow these guidelines, even if they are not employed by a medical facility. Before any of our drivers can become a medical courier, they have to understand and know how to follow all the rules that protect the privacy and rights of the patients.

OSHA Regulations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates workplace health and safety in the United States. This federal agency was formed in 1970 to ensure that employers provided a safe environment for their employees. A medical courier encounters many hazards in their working environment. There are the everyday risks that come with driving, plus the additional hazards that come from transporting biologics and biohazardous materials. Our drivers undergo training in OSHA biohazard procedures so that they know how to properly transport these materials and what to do in case of a spill or other emergency.
